To be considered an actual egress window, a window must fulfill a number of stringent requirements. The first requirement is a minimum of 5.7 square feet for the net clear opening. There must be at least 24 inches of clear height in the aperture. The net clear opening width of the window must be no less than 20 inches. It’s imperative that, from within the room, you can open the window without resorting to the use of any keys, tools, or specialized expertise. Lastly, the egress window basement installation must be done correctly. The sill of the window cannot be above 44 inches (1118 mm) above the ground. If a window fulfills or exceeds these specifications, it can be designated an egress window.
